As the 2018 legislative session closed, a bill failed that would have allowed weapons to be removed from the possession of a person deemed mentally unstable. House Bill 1436, the The Zackari Parrish III Violence Prevention Act, named for an officer killed on Dec. 31, 2017, by a mentally disturbed shooter, would have provided for an "extreme risk protection order" for the temporary removal of firearms from an individual when a court determines he or she poses a significant risk of harming themselves or others.…
